Dear reader,

thank you for taking the time to visit this blog and this “about” section. If the URL isn’t already a giveaway, my name is Kai Herbertz. Professionally I’m a scientist, but I’m also an emerging writer and game designer. This blog will mainly focus on the art of creative writing and the craft of game design. However, since numerous resources about technical aspects of both activities can be found on the internet, this is more of a diary, recording my journey. Consequently the two topics aren’t the only thing I will talk about, but also general observations or what’s happening in my life.

A few years ago, I believe it was in 2009, I said something to the effect of “Whenever I think of something cool, I turn to google and find out that it already exists.” This holds true even more so today. When I wanted to come up with a title for this blog, the obvious candidates (“life of kai”, “game dissector”, “game mechanics hut”) were already taken. Thus I feel forced to stick with the general description for now, which is a bit like the loathed “work in progress” approach that was so prevalent on webpages in the late 1990s, except that I don’t have that annoying sign with the working hard hat guy. In any case, thanks for stopping by. I hope you are enjoying your time here.

Bio 2016:

Dr. Kai Herbertz was born in Düsseldorf, Germany in 1977. He is a scientist by profession, as well as an indie author and indie game designer. After becoming a Diplom-Ingenieur in electrical and electronics engineering at the RWTH Aachen and earning his PhD in electrical and electronics engineering at Imperial College London, he is currently working as a research scientist for the Fraunhofer Society, which is most famous for inventing the MP3 audio compression algorithm.

His main research interest is in metamaterials (MTM), which are artificial periodic structures that exhibit properties not found in nature. Research in MTM garnered world wide media interest in 2006 when Sir Jon Pendry postulated that MTM could be used to create a Star Trek-esque cloaking device.

In August 2015 he published his medieval fantasy novel called “Age of Torridan” via Kindle Direct Publishing.
In June 2016 he founded the company Herbertz Entertainment UG (haftungsbeschränkt), which released its first game “Das Katastrophenspiel” at the SPIEL16 games fair in Essen in October 2016.
